Being style savvy is easier than one might imagine. Here, we present to you our take on the three essential styles that every man needs to stay savvy in most situations.

Are you the guy who wears a crumpled shirt and loose slacks to every event? Do neighbours and colleagues refer to you as the, ‘IT guy next door’ more often than your first name? If you took more than a second to answer “no”, or want to avoid such dastardly acknowledgments, consider the three types of looks that will put you in touch with the gentleman way of life. The best part? They’re timeless.

The Professional

Think Harvey Spector, the protagonist of the popular TV Series “SUITS”, played by Gabriel Macht – Humorous, charming, and dressed so impeccably, it hurts.

His justification? “People respond to how you dress.”

We’ll admit that looking as professional as Harvey all the time isn’t feasible or even necessary. Still, it takes effort to look bad in a well-tailored, textured grey suit. Grey is a great place to start, being a neutral colour that pairs amazingly well with just about any dress shirt, tie, and formal shoes (oxfords, brogues, monk straps, and so forth). One of the beautiful fact about grey is that the color does well to add an impression of maturity to its wearer.

The darker the shade of grey, such as charcoal or sealskin, the greater the aura of authority. Add a classic white Oxford shirt, a well-knotted necktie (ease up on the patterns though), and make a statement at every meeting before having to say a word.

The other choice of color for suits that you can’t go wrong with in a professional setting, is navy blue. We shall explore the navy blue suit in another article.

The Casual

A sport coat is certainly a great choice, an informal jacket that is a level below suit coat in terms of formality, then adorn it over the timeless combination of a plain t-shirt and a suitable trousers with a respectable cut (that includes denim jeans). If there’s a “guy-next-door-but-stylish” look, this would be a classic. Complete the look with a pair of chinos, and either loafers or even espadrilles. For men with a tad bit more adventurous taste dressing, do feel welcomed to expand your choices of sport jacket to explore other colors such as greys with mixed hues, and brown in various shades. It is important to keep in mind a general rule of thumb while carrying out ‘casual’ styling, avoid having more than 3 colors on you at the same time. The true essence of elegance is often times understated.

As mostly practical creatures, men are more than willing to trade looks for comfort. Use that to your advantage by advertising your stylish sensibilities when others can’t, or won’t. It takes almost no effort to put on a jacket, yet it makes an immediate and significant statement to those around you. Your pals might poke fun at you for trying too hard, but when in doubt, remember the words of Harvey Specter. A true gentleman takes calculated risk.

The Formal

Few things are certain in life: Death, taxes, and invitations to formal events — weddings, annual company dinners, and so forth. Not much can be done about dying or bills, but every gentleman lives for formal occasions. It’s not just the grandeur of the event, but also the opportunity to exemplify what his lifestyle and wardrobe represent.

A tailored tuxedo in black that conforms to your contours is a dignified way to earn attention at these formal powwows. You also can’t go wrong with a plain white shirt underneath, which also allows you to experiment with colored tuxedos. Tack on a silk black bowtie to complete the look, and take on the evening with the firm assurance that you are dressed to impress. As this article serves to provide a brief idea on the three essential styles for men, we will dive deeper into the black-tie look in another article as well.

Having these three styles in our wardrobe prepare us for most occasions when they call for it, and we don’t have to worry about showing up in a look that reflects poor taste in style. All it takes is a spoonful of courage and a small investment to stay ahead of the game!
